Born in 1963 from the merger between the town of Saint-Lary and Soulan, the resort of Saint-Lary-Soulan has been popular with Pyrenean skiers for many years. A town of workers, the mayor at the time decided to develop tourism around his village by creating a ski resort. Back in 1957 and the inauguration of the first cable car in Saint-Lary: the Pic de Lumière cable car, this infrastructure marked the beginning of the history of winter tourism. Shortly after the merger of the two villages, the resort of Saint-Lary-Soulan was lucky enough to host the French Olympic team in preparation for the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics. This was a golden opportunity that made Saint-Lary-Soulan known throughout France.

Situated on the Spanish border, Saint-Lary-Soulan benefits from the Néouvielle Nature Reserve for its ski area with more than 100km of pistes! Facing the Massif de la Néouvielle, the resort has an incredible natural setting thanks to the Aulon regional nature reserve which surrounds Saint-Lary-Soulan as well as all the neighbouring lakes such as Cap-de-Long, Orédon, Aubert or Oule.

Throughout its history, the resort has always put ecology and respect for nature at the centre of its development. With more than 80% of the communal land classified as a natural park or reserve, Saint-Lary-Soulan has been awarded the Quality Environment label thanks to its ISO 14001 certification. One of the village's greatest prides is their gondola line, which has reduced the resort's carbon footprint enormously by reducing vehicle traffic.
