Mont-Saint-Michel: What to do when you get there?

Le Mont-Saint-Michel is an island commune in the region of Normandy near the English Channel, located around 70 km north from Rennes. It is famous worldwide thanks to its islet where stands the beautiful Mont Saint Michel Abbey up to 80 m high. The bay and the architecture make this place one of the most frequented spot among French and foreign tourists.

The commune and its bay are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. From the 9th century, Le Mont-Saint-Michel began welcoming pilgrims from all the North of Europe and it is still a place to go for pilgrims until now. Climb toward the peak of the abbey to enjoy a breathtaking view and discover the famous statue dedicated to the archangel Michael, built at 150 m above the shore.

Le Mont-Saint-Michel is also known thanks to La Mère Poulard hostel and her famous recipe of the soufflé omelet. Another culinary specialty is the agneau de pré-salé (salt meadow lamb), and you can also find numerous creperie restaurants around the city that you definitely have to try out!

The Mont-Saint-Michel Bay represents one of the most beautiful bays in the world. It covers an area of approx. 500 km² and is home to a wide biodiversity. Come admire a large range of sea birds such as the osprey, the white stork, the European herring gull or the peregrine falcon, but also seals and even dolphins during summer!

If you want to reach the Mont-Saint-Michel by foot, the best way to do it is to go on a hiking trail. You can be accompanied with a certified guide who will tell you everything you have to know about the history and secrets of this emblematic place.

However, the major sport to practice on the bay is undoubtedly land sailing! Indeed, thanks to its vast area and the winds coming from the north and the west, this spot is perfect to try this amazing outdoor activity. On La Grève d’Hirel, only 15 min from the city of Saint-Malo, the Avel Char à Voile club offers a fun and enjoyable moment to spend with your friends and family. From the start of the activity, the wind and the incredible speed will provide you incredible thrills!

Thanks to the experimented instructors, you will quickly understand how to conduct your land sail, whether you are a beginner or an intermediate. You will find it so easy that you will rapidly ride around and explore this fantastic place!

Only 30 km south from Mont-Saint-Michel, the Grands Chênes forest in Bazouges-la-Pérouse town provides Canopy tours available for all the family. 8 tracks, more than 1 500 m zip lines and a canyon are waiting for you in order to spend an unforgettable moment in the heart of the forest!
