A land of agriculture and livestock farming, the hamlet that would become Alpe d'Huez centuries later was founded in the 12th century. Only inhabited in the summer, about twenty families lived in the heights of the Isère to use the land for farming.
In the early 1910s, skiing was first mentioned in Huez. Much frequented in the summer, tourists were now beginning to return in the winter. A decade later, things started to move! The first hotels emerged as early as 1920, the first ski lift was inaugurated in 1936, the construction of a cable car in 1954 and finally the opening of the altiport in 1967 for the Winter Olympics in Grenoble.
From then on, Alpe d'Huez began to make a name for itself internationally by hosting Olympic events, a stage of the Tour de France, the Andros Trophy and numerous winter sports competitions. Finally, in 1997, the famous Alpe d'Huez International Film Festival of Humour and Comedy was born!
