Kitzbühel: What to do when you get there?

Austria’s most famous ski spot, Kitzbühel is located on the Austrian Alps between the Hahnenkamm Mountains and the Kitzbühler Horn. This is one of the best ski spots in the world!

It is said that after completing his first successful ski in the winter of 1892 and influenced by Fridtjof Nansen’s book On snowshoes through Greenland, Franz Reisch decided to hike the Kitzbueheler Horn. After reaching the summit, he skied down on traditional Norwegian-made skis, thus becoming the father of Alpine Skiing.

Today, over 100 year later, Kitzbühel is a world-renowned ski resort. Only 95 km from the capital city of Innsbruck, the resort has about 170 km of groomed slopes and 120 km of cross-country ski trails, where you can glide over the white mantle.

Averaging 180 skiable days, Kitzbühel is home to the extremely challenging ski slope, the Streif. This slope hosts the annual Hahnenkamm Downhill Ski Race, which has become one the most followed alpine ski races in the world.

Away from the speed of the slopes, snowshoeing enthusiasts can enjoy the outstanding natural beauty of the Tyrol area. From the Kitzbuehel Alps Panorama you will reach Resterhoehe, and then you'll walk across the beautiful Austrian Alps and breathe in the fresh, clean mountain air. On the sunny side of the valley, you'll find Bichlalm, which is also attracts snowshoeing fans from far and wide.

When spring arrives, Kitzbühel hangs its white winter coat. The mountains in Tyrol turn green and become the perfect playground for adventure sport enthusiasts. Tyrol is fortunate enough to have an enviable landscape filled with green pasture covered mountains with over 170 km of hiking paths.

Kitzbühel offers more than 1,000 km of maintained hiking trails in which you can enjoy cattle grazed pastures and typical Austrian Alpine mountain huts that serve as mountain shelters. An incredible hiking option is to reach the summit of the Kitzbuhel Horn. On your way up, you can taste local produce such as cheese or bacon!

The mountains around Kitzbühel welcome rock climbers and mountaineers. The Kaiser has become a haven for climbers, who flock in from around the globe to overcome its challenging peak. At Conquerer and Emperor, climbers can also engage in a battle against gravity.

Fall in love with the juxtaposed green of the mountains over the clear blue sky, and discover why Kitzbühel seems pulled out of a fairy tale.
