Activity Snapshot
Activity description
Hike surrounded by high peaks covered in snow at the biggest glacier in Europe Svínafellsjökull glacier. Explore the beautiful wild side of Iceland!
Falljökull is located in Vatnajökull glacier, Europe's biggest glacier. Its snow-covered fields offer breathtaking views of the highest snowy peak of Iceland, Hvannadalshnjúkur, which rises more than 2,000 meters! Thanks to its incomparable beauty, the glacier has served as the scenery for dozens of movies like James Bond, Interstellar, and series like Game of Thrones.
The adventure will start from the Skaftafell Terminal, where your guide will provide you with all the equipment you need: crampons, ice axes, harnesses, and helmets. Then you will hop on the "Troll bus" and experience a scenic drive of about 10 minutes to the parking of the glacier. Stepping off the bus, a 15-minute walk will take you to the edge of the ice where your guide will show you how to put on the crampons so you can walk safely over ice.
You will spend between 1 hour and 1 hour and a half on the ice itself. You'll come across many crevasses, deep cracks in the surface of the glacier, and vertical shafts in the ice which are formed by melting water finding it’s way into fissures and cracks. If you come during wintertime, it's possible to take a look at small ice tunnels and witness the stunningly beautiful blue heart of the ice.
What makes this hiking trip so great is that your guide will introduce you in detail to the history of the glacier and tell you how the ice is formed on top of the mountains. Also, it doesn't matter if you don't have experience with crampons or ice axes; Troll Expeditions' certified guides will teach you all you need to know so you can have a safe walk on the glacier.
You will meet your guide and after a 15-minute drive, you will be at the tip of the Falljökull glacier.
You will then get all the necessary safety equipment, as the guide provides both crampons, ice axes and other safety gear needed to make the tour both safe and enjoyable.
