Sort: What to do when you get there?

The Spanish Pyrenees are one of the wildest regions in Europe, with many mountains, forests, and rivers which attract adventurers from everywhere. There, embedded in the mountain range you can find Sort, a small town that serves a base for exploring the Catalan Pyrenees.

Located around 200 kilometers from Barcelona, almost on the frontier with France and Andorra, Sort is a town that goes back to Roman times. Sort is little town and happens to be the capital of the county of Pallars Sobirá of the Lerida Province of Spain.

Though in the region you won’t find big cities, the region offers a plethora of activities that mostly benefit for the impressive mountain landscapes. Lush green forests, beautiful rivers with crystal clear waters will serve as a backdrop for your hiking trips. Just 40 kilometers from Sort you can take a hike up the mountain and get a view that many can only dream of! The Aigues Tortes National Park is quite popular for trekkers and hikers and it offers a rather easy 4-hour circuit.

Sort is located right next to the Noguera Pallaresa River, a well-known spot for the practice of white water sports. This river is born up in the mountains at Aran Valley at an elevation of about 2,000 meters, and its water flows all the way to the Mediterranean. When it comes to the stretch of the river that flows through Sort, the intensity of the river and its rapids depend on the water being released regularly by a dam. There, you can expect to raft on rapids of up to grade 3 on a 40-kilometer stretch. If rafting doesn’t really do the trick, you can lose the raft and grab a foam board and experience the amazing thrill of challenging the Noguera Pallaresa on a hydrospeeding trip.

Thanks to the whimsical geography of the Catalan Pyrenees, filled with rivers that carved through the mountains you get experience canyoning in one of the best areas in Europe to do it! You will be able to get back into nature and get a healthy dose of adrenaline while exploring the Gorges of Sort.

Once you’ve had enough of splashing around you might be interested in exploring the beauty of the region on a mountain bike. During summer the Baqueira/ Beret ski resort’s slopes become a challenging thrill if you want to experience downhill mountain biking. In that same spot, when winter comes and the flow of water decreases, snow arrives and it becomes one of the best ski resorts of the Pyrenees.

Regardless of the season, you come to Sort, the amount of fun you can have is unbelievable. Once again, the Pyrenees live up to the expectations.
